The Traveling Man Sculptures
Near Deep Ellum DART Station
2820 Elm St
Dallas, TX 75226
United States

In the heart of Dallas’s Deep Ellum neighborhood stands The Traveling Man, a striking trio of stainless steel sculptures that have become iconic symbols of the area.

Created by artists Brad Oldham and Brandon Oldenburg, these towering figures were unveiled in 2009 to celebrate Deep Ellum’s deep roots in music, culture, and the railroads that once ran through the district. The Traveling Man isn’t just a single sculpture—it’s a whimsical narrative told in three parts, each with its own unique vibe and presence.

  1. Awakening – The first sculpture shows just the head of The Traveling Man poking up from the earth, as if he’s being born right out of the neighborhood’s creative soil.

  2. Waiting on a Train – This piece has the robot sitting down, guitar in hand, serenely nodding to the music scene that Deep Ellum is known for.

  3. Walking Tall – The final and tallest sculpture, standing at an impressive 38 feet, shows The Traveling Man confidently strolling forward, his metal limbs in motion, symbolizing progress and the spirit of exploration.

Each figure is accompanied by a group of curious, playful metal birds, adding a touch of charm and wonder to the story. These sculptures are more than just public art—they’re part of the soul of Deep Ellum. They honor the neighborhood’s past while celebrating its dynamic, ever-evolving present.

You’ll find The Traveling Man near the Deep Ellum DART station, welcoming locals, visitors, musicians, and artists alike. Whether you’re just passing through or intentionally seeking it out, it’s a stop that captures the creativity and character of Dallas in the most unexpected way.
