Excitement in Waco: University of Dallas Mock Trial Team Makes History

The vibrant city of Waco was abuzz with anticipation as the University of Dallas (UD) proudly stepped onto the scene for the American Mock Trial Association’s 2025 Waco Regionals. This marked a groundbreaking moment as it was the first time UD showcased its Mock Trial team, made up exclusively of nine enthusiastic freshmen students. This was not just any competition; it was the start of something special!

A Synergy of Talent and Teamwork

With a fierce spirit of camaraderie, the UD Mock Trial team raised the stakes and dove into the competition. They wrapped up the tournament with a commendable record of 2-2, winning one defense trial against St. Mary’s University and a plaintiff trial against Lamar University. Their efforts didn’t go unnoticed; they received the prestigious “Spirit of AMTA” Award for displaying exceptional sportsmanship and professionalism throughout the event.

Shining Stars Among Fresh Faces

Among the team, freshman Seamus Malloy shone particularly brightly, earning recognition as one of nine Outstanding Witnesses out of a whopping 20 participating schools. The Outstanding Witness award is awarded for excellence in character portrayal, knowledge of the case, and sharp critical thinking skills. Malloy brought to life an eccentric social media influencer, showing just how profound an impact a well-crafted character can have in a courtroom simulation.

Bringing the Drama of the Courtroom to Life

The mock trial competition mimics real courtroom trials, featuring teams of between six and ten students who argue both plaintiff and defense cases. This season’s case involved the tragic and fictitious death of billionaire Avery Bancroft on a luxurious train, with his child, Taylor Hopson, standing accused of complicity in the death. The stakes were high, and the drama was palpable!

A Diverse Team of Talented Individuals

Leading the charge as captains of the UD Mock Trial team were Megan Hix, Jonas Newland, and Jude Self, who expertly guided their fellow team members through the intricacies of courtroom argumentation. Their lineup of witnesses also included talented peers: Gregory Uhlich, Cecilia Fojut, Joshua Moran, Madelyn Zadnik, and Bryanna Farris. With such a motivated group, it’s no wonder that the chemistry within the team was electric!

Support from Upperclassmen and Faculty

Adding to the team spirit were sophomore student leaders Sophia Choberka and Grace Hamilton, who played supportive roles throughout the event. They were guided by faculty advisor Dr. Thomas Schneider, who provided invaluable insights and encouragement to the rookie team. Such backing allowed the freshmen to flourish!

Looking Forward: A Bright Future

As the dust settles on the Waco Regionals, team members are buzzing with excitement about what’s to come. The bond they formed during this initial outing has ignited their passion for the competition, and each is eager for future tournaments. The UD Mock Trial team is already on the lookout for new talent and invites interested students to join in the fun for the 2025-2026 season. Those curious about participating can reach out via email to Megan Hix, Grace Hamilton, or Sophia Choberka.

Join the Mock Trial Legacy!

The competition season runs all the way from the fall case release to the thrilling National Championship Competition in May. With so much ahead, the University of Dallas Mock Trial team is poised to make their mark and continue building a legacy of excellence and camaraderie. Get ready, Waco – UD is just getting started!
